Apple and Samsung advise against using any solvents, cleaners, abrasives, or lint-free fabrics, including a T-shirt, to clean the display. They destroy the oleophobic coating of the screen or protective glass.
Cleaning Your Smartphone
The oleophobic coating is a layer of silicone, alkylsilane and a solvent several nanometers thick. It repels grease, dirt and water droplets, and helps your finger glide smoothly across the screen.
To clean the display from smudges, fingerprints, dust and dirt, a microfiber cloth is best suited. This is a special fabric that effectively removes dirt and does not leave scratches. It can also wipe the rest of the surface of the smartphone. Rougher fabrics can leave invisible defects on the surface and remove the oleophobic coating, which will cause the screen to get dirty faster over time.
A special cloth is recommended for cleaning Apple monitors: its anti-glare coating is very fragile and can be damaged even with ordinary microfiber.
Apple and Samsung allow you to lightly dampen a washcloth with clean water. You can’t charge your smartphone at the same time: even if it is protected from moisture, it’s better to play it safe and turn it off. Avoid contact with the holes and speaker grilles, and finally remove any remaining moisture with a dry cloth.
Apple recommends using wipes with 70% isopropyl alcohol. It not only dissolves grease and dirt, but also disinfects the surface by killing microorganisms.
Do not attempt to clean the charging port with conductive metal objects such as paper clips, tweezers, and screwdrivers. But you can use a regular wooden toothpick. Do not blow the speaker grilles with a vacuum cleaner: there is a risk of damaging the membrane.
Try to lightly walk on the speaker with a dry soft brush. And for the 3.5 mm jack, a thin ear stick dipped in isopropyl alcohol is suitable. If the situation is too bad, entrust the cleaning of the device to a specialist in the service center.
Dust often gets into the speakers and the charging connector, but you need to get it out carefully and not with any sharp object.
